How to Compare Estimated and Actual Filament Use
How can repeated estimates become better informed?
Work through the process
- Record the slicer estimate before printing.
- Weigh the same spool before and after the job.
- Compare actual use with the estimate and note purge, supports and failed starts.
Formula and worked illustration
If the estimate is 100 g and measured consumption is 108 g, the difference is 8 g or 8%. A later allowance can reflect this observation.
Inputs and limits
One measurement is not proof of a stable error rate. Scale resolution, handling and moisture can distort small differences. Keep observations tied to the specific setup.
Browser records are origin-specific and may be evicted. See MDN’s storage documentation for background on retention limits.
Use the Filament Inventory Manager to change the assumptions and compare your own inputs. Examples here are illustrative calculations, not results from a physical print test.
