How to Calculate the True Cost of a 3D Print

What should a maker count beyond the filament price?

Work through the process

  1. Price all material consumed, including waste.
  2. Add electricity, equipment time and hands-on labor.
  3. Divide the complete batch cost by the number of accepted parts.

Formula and worked illustration

100 g at 25 per kg costs 2.50. Add 0.24 electricity, 4 equipment allowance and 5 labor: batch cost is 11.74.

Inputs and limits

This is a cost estimate, not a tax or accounting calculation. Failed parts, packaging and selling fees must be represented if relevant.

Use the 3D Print Cost Calculator to change the assumptions and compare your own inputs. Examples here are illustrative calculations, not results from a physical print test.
